Can CBD help with inflammation?

Inflammation is a natural, healthy process that helps your body respond to injury and illness. While inflammation is necessary in the healing process, sometimes things can go awry and lead to devastating disease. Chronic inflammation has been linked to many common diseases, such as cancer, arthritis, coronary artery disease, diabetes, Alzheimer’s and more. People battling with such diseases often try a variety of lifestyle and pharmaceutical treatments, sometimes with good results, and sometimes not. And many are wondering if CBD can help with inflammation.

Promising research shows CBD’s effects on inflammation

Study after study has shown the CBD has positive effects on inflammation, including this one, this one, and this one. This is in addition to the anecdotal evidence you can find all over the internet, such as reading reviews and patient stories. Or you could check out this article in Forbes, all about how athletes are using CBD to manage pain and inflammation.

CBD aids in these conditions in mice

Although more human studies are needed to prove CBD’s effectiveness in treating human ailments, CBD has been shown to be effective in treating several conditions in mice.

  • In this study, CBD reduced inflammation in mice with acute lung injuries.
  • In this study, CBD was shown to reduce chronic inflammatory and neuropathic pain in mice without causing analgesic tolerance.
  • This study indicates that CBD reduces chronic inflammation in the gut and may become a novel treatment for inflammatory bowel diseases.
  • In this study, topical CBD reduces inflammation and pain-related behaviors in mice.

Lack of side effects makes CBD an even more tempting treatment

This study states that cannabinoids do not come with the side effects of NSAIDs, which are often prescribed or taken OTC for inflammation and related pain. Because of their effectiveness and lack of side effects, the study states that cannabinoids are of special interest in treating major chronic inflammation.

CBD may inhibit inflammation via the endocannabinoid system

Though science is not exactly sure how CBD decreases inflammation, researchers believe it has someone to do with its interaction with the body’s endocannabinoid system, which has receptors all over the body. This study states that the endocannabinoid system is connected to how the body processes inflammation, and says the endocannabinoid system offers possibilities for prevention and intervention of inflammation.
